Hybridization for expanded octets

Postby Mannat Sukhija 1E » Fri Nov 04, 2016 3:01 pm

What would be the hybridization for an atom with an expanded octet, for example the hybridization of P in PCl5? Would it be sp4? Or is that not permitted.

It would be sp3d, because there's 5 regions of electrons. The s counts as one, adding p3 is four, and d makes five regions.

I think it should actually be written as dsp3, but other than that your answer is correct.

Typically in hybrid orbitals, isn't it supposed to be written as sp3d? I know that in electron configurations, the d orbital is written before the s and the p. Does this follow the same rule or is it separate?
