Dr.Lavelle did an example in class that had an unhybridized p orbital. I believe it was ethene. I might have missed something, but I'm still not sure how we would know that there is one 2p orbital that is unhybridized and would lead to a pi bond.

As I discussed in class there must be conservation of orbitals: 4 orbitals before hybridization = 4 orbitals after hybridization
If only 3 orbitals are used in sp2 hybridization then the four atomic orbital is still present as an unhybridized p-orbital.
