Unhybridized Orbitals

I don't fully get the purpose of unhybridized orbitals for figuring out an atom's hybridization. Is it to fill up all the number of electrons or is there something else to it? Also if the hybridized orbitals fill up all the number of electrons will there be no unhybridized orbitals?

The orbitals that are not a part of the hybridized orbital as will form pi bonds.

Like in the example that was done in class with C2H4, the unhybridized 2p orbitals on each C atom overlapped side-to-side to form the pi bond.
