### Question 41

Can someone explain #41 and the steps to solving it?
41. Acrylonitrile, CH2CHCN, is used in the synthesis of acrylic fibers such as Orlon. Write the Lewis structure of Acrylonitrile and describe the hybrid orbitals of each carbon atom. What are the approximate values of the bond angles?

### Re: Question 41

For 41, the compound is a chain of 3 carbons such that the first two have a double bond the second and third have a single bond. The first carbon has two bonds with H, the second with one bond with H and the last C with a triple bond with N. The N has a lone pair. The first carbon has three regions of electron density so it has a sp2 hybridization, the second C has sp2 as well bc is has three regions of electron density. The last carbon has two regions of electron density so it has a hybridization of sp as well as two bonding p orbitals to form the triple bond with nitrogen. The first two C have the shape of trigonal planar with 120 degree angles while the third carbon has a linear shape with 180 degree angles.

Rough Diagram: the l is a bond, the = is a double bond and the =- is a triple bond.

C - C = C =-N:
