### Homework question #43

Can anyone explain the reasoning behind number 43? The question is:
Do you expect the bond angle between 2 hybrid orbitals to increase or decrease as the s-character of the hybrids is increased?

You would expect the bond angle to increase.
This is because of the trend in bond angles in these hybrids:
sp - 180
sp2 - 120
sp3 - 109.5

As the number of p orbitals increases, the "p-character" of the hybrids increases, and therefore the "s-character" decreases. So as the s character increases (less p-orbitals), the bond angle also increases.

Can you explain what they mean by "s-character" though? Besides equal electron density, what are the characteristics of a hybridized s bond? Would whether it increases or decreases the bond just depend on the ratio of s:p orbitals?
