4.43 - "s-character"

Postby Kyra LeRoy 1E » Sat Nov 25, 2017 8:08 pm

Can someone explain the answer to this question to me? It asks:
"Do you expect the bond angle between two hybrid orbitals to increase or decrease as the s-character of the hybrids is increased?"
The correct answer is increase.

Also, what exactly do they mean by "s-character"?

Thanks!

What I took it to mean was that there were less p orbitals hybridized with the s orbital, so the s orbital "retains more character" in the hybridization. Basically, I guess there's more of the fractional s orbital per hybridized orbital. The reason that the bond angles increase as there's more s character can be easily seen if you look at how many hybridized orbitals you are creating. sp is for 2 electron pairs/atoms, sp2 is for 3, sp3 is for 4, and so on. Looking at say, sp3, we know the bond angles to be 109.5 or a little less depending on the number of atoms/electron pairs. Moving to sp2, we see that it's 120 or slightly less, and sp is 180. Therefore, we can see that the bond angles increase.
