### Do pi bonds only form with double/triple bonds?

Is it correct to say that pi bonds will only occur when there is a double or triple bond in the molecule?

Thanks

Hi Sofia,

This is correct, but it is also important to note that in the case of resonance, you can also have partial pi bond character.

Hope this helps.

yes, make sure to know that a triple bond has two pi bonds but a double bond only has one.

single bond = sigma bond

double bond = sigma + pi bonds

triple bond = sigma + 2pi bonds

so yes essentially pi bonds from double and triple bonds

Yes, Pi bonds are always the second and third bonds while the first bond or a single bond is always the sigma bond. There is always one sigma bond and every bond in addition is a pi bond.

Yes, pi-bonds are bonds created by the overlapping of the p-orbitals.
