Bond Notation

For notating the composition of a bond, such as C2sp2, why do you put the 2 before the orbital hybridization?

Hi,

If I remember correctly, it was said in a review session today that that number indicates the row on the periodic table. C is in the second row, so a 2 is placed in front of the hybridization. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Yes I heard that too. But I remember him saying something about omitting it if the question doesn't ask for it. Can someone clarify this part?

I remember he initially had C2sp and then erased the 2
