hybridization example

Postby tatianatumbling_1J » Mon May 28, 2018 7:20 pm

in lecture, we briefly went over hybridization. the professor used carbon as an example. I was wondering why he only drew 4 electrons instead of 6? is it because we only use the valence electrons?

Is this something we need to know for the exam?

Yes, I believe he is referring only to the valence electrons (the electrons that will form bonds with other atoms).

Also what exam are you referring to –- the final?

Yes he was only referring to the valence electrons of carbon.

And I believe my TA told me that there was a hybridization question on one of the past finals, so there’s a chance we will see it on our final. I think the only type of question that we’d be asked is what the hybridization of the orbitals of a certain molecule would be.
