If an atom has a single bond this would suggest that there is 1 sigma bond, but now if there was a double bond there would be 1 sigma bond + 1 pi bond, and then if there was a triple bond there would be 1 sigma bond + 2 pi bonds present.
It is important to remember that the sigma bond will always form first, followed by the pi bonds. In the formation of multiple bonds, there will always be ONE sigma bond followed by 1 or 2 pi bonds.

Pi bonds result from overlap of atomic orbitals that are in contact through two areas of overlap. Since Pi bonds are weaker than they can be 2 pi bonds in a triple bond and one sigma bond.
