## sp^3 orbitals

$sp, sp^{2}, sp^{3}, dsp^{3}, d^{2}sp^{3}$

### sp^3 orbitals

During lecture yesterday the professor mentioned unfilled sp^3 orbitals each form σ-bonds. Do we just have to memorize this or is there a rule that dictates this?

I don't think you necessarily need to memorize it but understand the overall concept just like we've been doing for the last 9 weeks. The only thing I see worthy of memorizing is the shape names and the bond lengths.

I think instead of unfilled sp3 orbitals, it should be unpaired electron in sp3 orbitals that form σ-bonds since empty orbitals are not able to form any bonds with other atoms

I agree with Nabila--empty orbitals can't form bonds, unpaired electrons in 2p3 orbitals form sigma bonds. You might be thinking about unhybridized p-orbitals, which form pi bonds.
