Re: σ bonds
sigma bonds occur when there is an overlap between atomic orbitals. 1 single covalent bond is a sigma bond.

Re: σ bonds
To add on, a sigma bond is a covalent bond resulting from the formation of a molecular orbital by the end-to-end overlap of atomic orbitals. These overlaps can occur between s-s, p-p, s-p

Re: σ bonds
Single bond: one sigma bond
Double bond: one sigma and one pi bond
Triple bond: one sigma and two pi bonds

Re: σ bonds
a sigma bond is when there is one single covalent bond
however, double bonds and triple bonds also have a sigma bond

Re: σ bonds
Remember how the p-orbitals are oriented: one along the x-axis, one along the y-axis, and one along the z-axis. Because of this orientation, only one of the bonds can overlap the orbitals and be a sigma bond. The other orbitals are side-by-side and therefore form pi bonds.

Re: σ bonds
sign bonds allow atoms to rotate while pi bonds do not. This is because the end-to-end overlap of the atomic orbitals, while in pi bonds there is a side-by-side orientation
