Electron Promotion

Postby Or Fisher 1I » Sat Jun 02, 2018 8:48 pm

Can someone please explain the concept of electron promotion in the hybridization of orbitals? I am confused about what the purpose of it is.
Thanks.

Hi, to my understanding Promotion is when an electron sharing an orbital in a lower energy state such as the s orbital, moves to an open orbital in a higher energy state, such as the P orbital. This lowers the overall energy of the atom because instead of sharing an orbital, it is in its own orbital, creating a lower energy state because electrons want to be as far apart from one another as possible. I think that the ability for an electron to do this allows for it to hybridize.
