### Hybrid Orbitals and lone pairs

How do you account for lone pairs in hybridization?

A lone pair takes up one of the hybridized orbitals. For example, h2o is sp3 hybridized with a lone pair in one of its orbitals.

### Re: Hybrid Orbitals and lone pairs

hybridization can be calculating based off how may regions of electron density surround an atom so in the case of lone pairs, they make up one region of electron density therefore one additional orbital. For example if an atom has three bonds and a lone pair it has an sp3 hybridization.
