Would a sigma bond be stronger than a pi bond and why?

Yes, a sigma bond is stronger than a pi bond. This is because the length of a sigma bond is shorter than a pi bond, and it takes more energy to break a sigma bond.

Pi bonds have a sideways overlap while sigma bonds have an axial overlap. Axial overlaps have a higher amount of overlapping than sideways overlaps do.

sigma bonds are able to rotate on their axis and are a stronger where as pi bonds would break if they were rotated

Whenever a bond breaks that is then classified as a chemical reaction. So if a pi bond breaks, the molecule has then undergone a chemical reaction.

Because a double bond is a sigma bond and a pi bond and every type of chemical bond has to have at least one sigma bond, how are double bonds shorter than single bonds then?

I think a double bond is stronger than a single bond because the two p orbitals overlap and pull the atoms closer together.

Wait but aren't sigma bonds single bonds? Wouldn't sigma bonds be weaker since single bonds are weaker than double bonds (which is what the pi bonds are)?

since pi bonds are caused by side-to-side overlapping where there is much less overlap due to the orbital paths being parallel, they are easier to break than sigma bonds that overlap head-to-head.
