## Meaning of hybridization

### Meaning of hybridization

What is the point of hybridization? Aren't there still the same amount of unpaired electrons, even with a hybrid orbital?
For example, Carbon can form 4 bonds in the 2p orbital (each of the 2 unpaired electrons can receive a pair, and there can be 2 new electrons added for a total of 4) and so can the 2sp3 orbital (4 unpaired electrons, each can receive one more for a total of 4). So why form a hybrid orbital?

From what I know, the point is just to redistribute the electrons even if the amount remains the same. We redistribute them to make them suitable for chemical bonds through factors like energy and shape. Hope that helps

Carbon with its unhybridized atomic orbitals can only form 2 bonds because it only has 2 unpaired electrons (unpaired electrons are necessary to form bonds; just having an empty orbital doesn't let an atom form a bond).
The overall purpose of hybridization is to lower the energy of the molecule overall. Chapter 4.5 in the textbook has a really good explanation.
