sp^3d or dsp^3

Postby Mario Reyes 1C » Mon Jun 04, 2018 9:11 pm

Does it matter which way you write a hybridization with 5 regions of electron density? Is either way of writing it correct?

It should not matter which order you write it in, both ways say the same thing.

The order does not matter, as far as I know.

I know that normally you are suppose to write it dsp^3 due to the energy levels.

I had the same question last week. The order doesn't matter, but I believe writing the d at the end is preferred.

Does dsp^3 mean that the s and p orbitals used are from a shell higher than the d? For example, when 3d, 4s, and 4p are involved in hybridization we say dsp^3?
