General definition/context

What is hybridization in general, in terms of its definition as well as how it is used in the context of this lesson?

You use hybridization to explain molecular geometry hence:
linear → sp
trigonal planar → sp²
tetrahedral → sp³
trigonal pyramidal → sp³d
octahedral → sp³d²

Hybridization occurs because electrons in an atom or molecule are randomly dispersed, and sometimes happen to be gathered in one area. This causes dipole dispersion, and another dipole molecule interacts with these electrons making Van Der Waals forces. The atomic orbitals overlap (hybridization) to create a larger orbital and allow from stronger/ more stable bonds.
