Hybridization Notation

Postby Lauren Huang 1H » Sat Nov 17, 2018 9:40 pm

Are the notations that we are learning for hybridization only sp,sp2,and sp3?

My PLF said that these were the only ones that we would really need to know because he usually doesn't go that far, but that it isn't too hard to come up with other hybridization notations. Remember that the exponents should just add up to the number of regions of electron density.

I believe that we will most frequently encounter sp3, sp2, and sp hybridization, but in Monday's lecture, Dr. Lavelle also mentioned that sp3d and sp3d2 hybridized orbitals exist when the central atom has an expanded octet.
