Sigma/Pi bonds

What exactly is the purpose of identifying sigma/pi bonds in molecules?

A sigma bond (σ bond) is a bond formed by the overlap of orbitals in an end-to-end fashion, with the electron density concentrated between the nuclei of the bonding atoms. A pi bond (π bond) is a bond formed by the overlap of orbitals in a side-by-side fashion with the electron density concentrated above and below the plane of the nuclei of the bonding atoms.

Identifying the bonds allows you to determine bond strengths and lenghts (not the exact number but relative to other molecules/bonds).

Understanding the sigma/pi bond composition of a bond helps you to understand the internal structure of the bond and what it looks like.

Also, it's good to know that:

single bond - one sigma
double bond - one sigma, one pi
triple bond - one sigma, two pi

etc.

I am not sure if this question makes sense but are the sigma and pi bonds correlated to the type of bond like covalent or ionic bonds?

What's the difference between "end-to-end" and "side-to-side"?
