Hybridization

Postby 705088777 » Mon Nov 19, 2018 1:30 pm

Can someone explain hybridization? I was really confused about what it is and how to do it?

Hybridization is the concept of mixing atomic orbitals into new hybrid orbitals (with different energies, shapes, etc., than the component atomic orbitals) suitable for the pairing of electrons to form chemical bonds in valence bond theory. Like Lavelle said in class, its easier to start by figuring out how many electron densities there are and from that select the hybridization scheme that matches the VSEPR model.

Hybridization is the concept that normal atomic orbitals of different types (s,p,d) can hybridize or join together to meet at a middle energy where the electrons are able to form bonds and meet the molecular geometry of the molecules. Different hybridizations describe different shapes and the regions of electron density are the same as the number of hybrid orbitals.

For the example he used in class (ethene), why did we need the additional 2p orbital with the hybridized 2sp2?
