Hybridized vs. Unhybridized Orbitals

What is the difference between hybridized and unhybridized orbitals?

Hybrid orbitals are a bonding scheme or model of orbitals, experimentally determined to match what actually happens in bonding. Hybrid orbitals are hybrids, or a mix, or atomic orbitals.

Unhybridized orbitals are the regular atomic orbitals that we have always known. Hybridized orbitals are orbitals that represent a mixture of unhybridized orbitals. These orbitals show what actually happens in bonding and help determine the molecular shape.

If this helps, a sigma bond is made up of hybridized orbitals and a pi bond is made up of unhybridized orbitals

hybridized orbitals have energy that is between unhybridized orbitals, it can be seen as a blend of different orbitals. such as the sp3 hybridized orbital, which is a blend of the s orbital and the 3 p orbitals, and has an energy that is between the s and p orbitals. this also results in a different bond angle for the atom that has the hybridized orbitals in the molecular structure.
