Are there any quick ways to remember hybridization in relation to bond number?

Dr. Lavelle said the easiest way to understand hybridization is to think about regions of electron density rather than bond number, so hybridize to the point where number of orbitals (sp3 = 4 regions) equals number of regions of density.

If you count the amount of atoms and lone pairs surrounding the central atoms you will get the steric number.
# 2 = two sp orbitals
# 3 = three sp^3 orbitals
# 4 = four sp^3 orbitals
# 5 = five dsp^3 orbitals
# 6 = six d^2sp^3 orbitals
