How can a sigma bond turn into a pi bond?

A sigma bond is a single bond, so every bond is a sigma bond.
Whenever another bond is added, it's called a pi bond.
sigma=single bond
sigma and pi=double bond
1 sigma and 2 pi=triple bond

As I understood it the sigma bond doesn't become a pi bond, it is that a sigma bond is there and a pi bond is added next to it. Is this right?

Ya, a sigma bond doesn't become a pi bond, its just that more types of bonds are added on as you go from single to double to triple bonds. I found this image really helpful in visualizing how a pi bond and sigma bond interact in a double bond. Image

A sigma bond is a single bond and becomes a pi bond when another bond is added.
