double bonds

Postby Cecilia Jardon 1I » Fri Nov 23, 2018 11:01 pm

Just to make sure, a pi bond consists of a sigma and pi bond?

A double bond consists of one sigma and one pi bond. (Sigma and pi bonds are different because of the different orientation of the orbitals of the bond.)

Not exactly. A pi bond has two electrons that lie on two lobes, one on each side of the internuclear axis, but is still only one bond. P-orbitals in a pi bond overlap in a side by side fashion. A sigma bond results from end-to end overlap (consequently because of this a sigma bond is stronger than a pi bond). There cannot be a pi bond without a sigma bond, but the sigma bond is not part of the pi bond, they are the result of separate overlapping orbitals. A double bond contains one sigma bond and one separate pi bond. A triple bond contains one sigma bond and two pi bonds, so a pi bond could not contain a sigma bond otherwise a triple bond wouldn't be possible

A single bond consists of a sigma bond. A double bond consists of a sigma and a pi bond, where the electron density is above and below the internuclear axis

Double bonds consist of one pi and one sigma bond because the orientation of a double bond consists of a both a side to side overlap as well as a end-to-end overlap. When you continue to add bonds, you'll add another pi bond since there is now another side-to-side overlap.

In a double bond there is one pi bond and one sigma bond. In a triple bond, there is one sigma bond and two pi bonds now due an additional side-to-side overlap.

A single bond is a sigma bond, a double bond is one sigma and one pi bond, and a triple bond is one sigma bond and two pi bonds.

A sigma bond involves end-to-end overlapping of electron orbitals while pi bond involves overlapping of orbitals sideways. A pi bond does not consist of a sigma bond; a double bond consists of both sigma and pi bonds.

Because Pie bonds don't overlap like Sigma bonds, they are weaker than Sigma bonds. That's why double bonds are less than twice as strong as single bond.

the pi bond wraps around the sigma bond in a double bond, and can only form when a sigma bond is present, but no, a pi bond is only a pi bond.
