### Steps to figure out hybridization

Do you have to figure the lewis dot and/or VSEPR model to get the right hybridization? What are the steps to figure out if something needs hybridization?

In most cases you do have to draw the lewis structure to figure out hybridization but in my discussion, my TA told us that some elements you can figure it out just by looking at the element you are given, for example C2H4, you know that there will be a total of 3 bonds and when there are 3 bond pairs, the hybridization is sp2.
Three bonds=sp2
four bonds=sp3
two bonds=sp
five bonds=sp3d
six bonds=sp3d2
Remember that even when you have double/triple bonds in between two elements, this still only counts as one bond since there are only two elements you are bonding

When you draw the lewis structure, you will be able to identify how many bonding regions there are. Then, you just need to make sure the hybridization state has the same number of orbitals as bonding regions.
