sp orbitals

what do the 2 and 3 mean in sp2, sp3, sp3d2 etc orbitals?

The 2 and 3 represent the number of p orbitals that are being hybridized.

Furthermore, sp3 means there's one sigma bond, sp2 means one sigma bond, one pi bond, and sp means there's one sigma bond and two pi bonds.
