Sigma and pi bond

Postby yast_27 » Mon Nov 26, 2018 9:16 am

Hi,

I was wondering how we were suppose to work with resonnance structure to determine sigma and pi bond?
Do we count 2pi bond, 2 sigma bond or one of each?

Thank you very much!

You would do separate sigma and pi bond descriptions for each resonance structure. Since they are two different structures, you would not count them together.

The number of pi and sigma bonds is for each structure/resonance structure, so if asked how many pi or sigma bonds a molecule has, you should not add up the pi or sigma bonds of all the resonance structures.
