### Bonds

What's the difference between sigma and pi bonds and how can we easily distinguish them?

### Re: Bonds

Sigma bonds are larger and stronger covalent bonds formed by the direct overlap of atomic orbitals.

Pi bonds are due to less overlap and are generally weaker. They consist of double and triple bonds.

### Re: Bonds

Sigma bonds also have the ability to rotate, while pi bonds are fixed.

### Re: Bonds

There can only be one sigma bond between two atoms while there can be zero, one, or two pi bonds between two atoms. In general, sigma bonds determine the shape of a molecule whereas pi bonds make atoms move closer together.

### Re: Bonds

Also, a single bond is sigma bond, a double is sigma bond plus one pi bond, and triple is sigma bond plus two pi bonds
