Why does hybridization occur?

Hybrid orbitals have lower energy than their unhybridized counterparts, so I think hybridization occurs to make the compounds more stable due to lower energy pockets.

hybridization occurs, because when we observe the lewis dot structure of an element we see that they have more electrons attached than the traditional orbitals allot. To accommodate the excess electrons, hybrid orbitals are created which are in between the energy levels of the orbitals they are hybrids of.
