On the 2.59 homework, how do we write the composition of bonds and hybridization of lone pairs for H2C=CHCHO when you have a double bond with one pi and one sigma bond? I am having difficulty understanding, for example, how to reach one of the answers of sigma (C2sp^2,O2sp^2) pi(C2p, O2p). Also, how do you figure out what the coefficient (number) in front of each orbital is? Thank you.
Hey Vana, so both C and O have 3 2SP^2 orbitals and one unhybridized p orbital. The 3 2SP^2 orbitals initially had 1 electron in each orbital but then they're filled up by each sigma bond, whereas the pi bond fills up the unhybridized p orbital. We know it's 2 in front since C and O are on the second period.
