### s-character

What is the "s-character" of a hybridized atom?

### Re: s-character

how much s there is compared to p or d

more s character in sp hybridized orbital because its 50/50
compared to sp2 hybridized orbital which is 33% s
and sp3 is 25% s character

### Re: s-character

It is the ratio of the s orbital to other orbitals. It is usually described by a percentage of s character. For example, sp3 hybrid has 25% s character.

### Re: s-character

To find s character, just take how many other orbitals there are and find the fraction of s compared to the total. for example sp is 1/2 so 50%, sp2 is 1/3, sp3, is 1/4 so 25%, sp4 is 1/5, etc.

### Re: s-character

sp: 1/2
sp2: 1/3
sp3: 1/4
dsp3: 1/5
d2sp3: 1/6

It's the ratio of the orbitals.

### Re: s-character

To add on to what s-character is and how to determine how much s-character is present, triple bonds have more s-character than single bonds. The more s-character, the shorter and tighter the bond is.
