Hybrid Orbitals Notation?

Postby Kimberly 1H » Tue Nov 27, 2018 4:59 pm

Each hybrid orbital is formed by the linear combinations of x amount of orbitals, but I don't understand the way they're denoted. In the textbook it lists the one of the 3 sp2 orbitals as:
h1= s+21/2py

I also don't understand where that sqrt(2) comes into play

I'm not sure what that denotation is saying. Maybe try double checking what it says in the textbook in case you were reading it wrong.
