Sp3d or dsp3

Postby Chloe Orsini 1K » Wed Nov 28, 2018 7:37 pm

Is it sp3d or dsp3 in the book it’s sp3d but on here and other places I’ve seen it as dsp3, which one is it?

I dont think it matters. Both ways of writing the hybridization orbital works

This question was answered by a Chem_Mod before.

Question: When writing the hybridization of an atom is it better to write it like "dsp3" or "sp3d"? Do you have a preference?

Answer: Either is ok. But sp3d is preferred.

I don't think it matters which order it is written, but I prefer to do sp3d

Order doesn't matter but some prefer writing it dsp3 since it shows that the d orbital is utilized however sp3d is in order of utilization.

In Dr. Lavelle’s most recent lecture, I believe he said you can write it either way, but I prefer to write it as sp3d.

I think Dr. Lavelle put it as dsp3 in the notes because that's how the textbook puts it, but standard convention is sp3d

Yeah, to be honest I don't think it matters. I remember Dr. Lavelle saying in class you could write it either way :)

Either sp3d or dsp3 is correct.

I think either way is fine although Prof. Lavelle used dsp^3 in his lecture.

According to Dr. Lavelle (in his latest lecture), both are correct. :)

I don't think it really matters since both are correct. I think sp3d is more of the convention though.

The convention doesn't really matter in this case. I usually just say sp3d because it sounds better and I've seen this notation more frequently in textbooks.

Hello! Dr.Lavelle mentioned in lecture that both of these notations work. Hope this works!

Dr. Lavelle said in his lecture that you can write it either way.

It can be written either way, they both work and represent the same thing.

I would personally use sp3d, but like everyone has stated, it doesn't really matter which one you decide to use!

As Lavelle mentioned, it does not really matter. It will be accepted either way.

I personally have used sp3d my entire life but Dr. Lavelle seems to use dsp3 so I switched up my notation. Regardless, Dr. Lavelle said both are fine and essentially the same!

Both are correct and I prefer to use sp3d because it is easier to memorize!

It's the same thing. I personally like to use the first one because it follows the order we are used to!

Sp3d and dsp3 are both correct and indicate the same thing, so you can write whichever one you prefer! Personally, I like to write sp3d because it is in the order of the atomic orbitals.

They both are correct. You can use either one of them.
