Re: Sp3d or dsp3
This question was answered by a Chem_Mod before.
Question: When writing the hybridization of an atom is it better to write it like "dsp3" or "sp3d"? Do you have a preference?
Answer: Either is ok. But sp3d is preferred.

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
Order doesn't matter but some prefer writing it dsp3 since it shows that the d orbital is utilized however sp3d is in order of utilization.

In Dr. Lavelle’s most recent lecture, I believe he said you can write it either way, but I prefer to write it as sp3d.

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
I think Dr. Lavelle put it as dsp3 in the notes because that's how the textbook puts it, but standard convention is sp3d
Re: Sp3d or dsp3
Yeah, to be honest I don't think it matters. I remember Dr. Lavelle saying in class you could write it either way :)

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
I don't think it really matters since both are correct. I think sp3d is more of the convention though.

The convention doesn't really matter in this case. I usually just say sp3d because it sounds better and I've seen this notation more frequently in textbooks.

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
Hello! Dr.Lavelle mentioned in lecture that both of these notations work. Hope this works!

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
I would personally use sp3d, but like everyone has stated, it doesn't really matter which one you decide to use!

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
I personally have used sp3d my entire life but Dr. Lavelle seems to use dsp3 so I switched up my notation. Regardless, Dr. Lavelle said both are fine and essentially the same!

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
It's the same thing. I personally like to use the first one because it follows the order we are used to!

Re: Sp3d or dsp3
Sp3d and dsp3 are both correct and indicate the same thing, so you can write whichever one you prefer! Personally, I like to write sp3d because it is in the order of the atomic orbitals.
