hybridization notation

Postby 305115396 » Wed Nov 28, 2018 11:24 pm

When writing out the notation to indicate hybridization within sigma bonds, I noticed that the textbook writes it as 2sp2. A good reference is question 4.95. Basically why is it written as 2sp2 instead of sp2?

When referring to hybridization notation, it does not matter whether it is written 2sp2 or sp2. You would only use 2sp2 when writing the composition of each bond.

The 2 in 2sp^2 is the energy level of the hybridized orbital it is simply the period of the element.

The 2 refers to the energy level of the orbital.
