2s or s?

When do you use 2s or s for hybridization?

2s specifics the energy level and the orbital of the atom. S just refers to what type of orbital.

The coefficient number in front of the S orbital means the period or energy level it is in. Hydrogen is in period 1 and would be written as H1s and then Carbon is in period 2 and is written is as C2S, that is if it were to have one unpaired electron like Hydrogen does.

the number in front represents the period the element is in. S is the orbital.

if a question asks what is the hybridization around the central atom, does it need a coefficient to specify which energy level?

My TA said that we don't need to specify which energy level

yea you don't have to specify the energy level just make sure you know the number of orbitals needed and that you represent it with the correct hybridization in terms of s and p.

The coefficent number in front represents the period the atom is in, while the S is refering to the orbital.
