2SP^3 vs. SP^3

Postby SydBenedict2H » Sat Dec 01, 2018 7:58 pm

Is 2SP^3 always equivalent to SP^3, or just sometimes? Its when its on that level correct? All of the examples we did in class were the 2SP^3 so I'm slightly confused as to how it works for molecules above period 2.

2SP^3 is simply more specific than SP^3. They can mean the same thing.

Exactly, adding a number before the hybrid orbital just specifies the period it is found in. In this case period 2 would result in a coefficient of 2 before the hybrid orbital.

Just adding on, elements such as Carbon would have hybridization 2sp^2 and sp^2. Hydrogen would be 1s. Like mentioned above, the one with the 2 in front is just more specific and it allows you to figure out which element is being hybridized.

Does it matter if we put the 2 in front of it on tests? or are both ways counted correct?

I would recommend including the coefficient in the front just to be safe since it tells the grader that you know what period the element is found in.

So we are always supposed to include the coefficient in our hybridization answer?
