How do I know when to add the extra p orbital after the sp hybridization?

what do you mean extra p orbital? sp is 2 regions of e- density, sp2 is 3 regions, sp3 is 4 regions, sp3d is 5, sp3d2 is 6.

To figure out the hybridization, you just count the number of electron density areas. Then, you equate it to the orbital levels. For example, if you have three electron density regions, you would write sp2 (s has 1 and p has 2). P can have up to three, and d can have up to 5

If there is one region of electron density then its s, 2 is sp,3 is sp2, 4 is sp3, 5 is dsp3, 6 is d2sp3.

sp means that there are two regions of electron density. If there are three regions of electron density rather than two, then there would be another p, making it sp2

Unless there is only one region of electron density, then there will always be a "p" proceeding the "s".

The hybridization depends on the amount of electron densitys. (ex: lone pairs, bonds, etc.)
