What exactly is hybridization and what is it primarily used for?

As I explained in class. The hybridization model is needed to obtain the correct bonding and shape.

I went through CH4 as an example.
C has only two unpaired electrons and therefore would form two covalent bonds.
Yet it forms four bonds which one can show with four sp3 hybrid orbitals each with one unpaired electron to form four covalent bonds with four hydrogen atoms.

See class notes and textbook for more examples.

Make sure to discuss this Discussion Section and in Step-Up Sessions.
