Homework Problem 4.43

4.43: Noting that the bond angle of an sp3 hybridized atom is 109.5 and that of an sp2 hybridized atom is 120 , do you expect the bond angle between two hybrid orbitals to increase or decrease as the s-character of the hybrids is increased?

The solutions manual says that as the s-character increases, bond angles increase. How do we go about determining this answer and why is it that bond angles increase?

The less p-value there is in the hybrid the more s character there is. For example, SP (there is 50% S character and 50% P character) with a bond angle 180, for SP^2 (there is 33% S character and 66% P character) with a bond angle 120, for SP^3 (there is 25% S character and 75% P character) with a bond angle 109.5, so as you increase S character the bond angles increase and if you increase P character the bond angles increase.
