### Homework Problem 4.95

4.95: Consider the bonding in CH2£CHCHO. (a) Draw the most important Lewis structure. Include all nonzero formal charges. (b) Identify the composition of the bonds and the hybridization of each lone pair—for example, by writing (H1s,C2sp2).

I understand how to draw out the Lewis structure for this problem, but I don't understand how we get the hybridization notation. Specifically, for example, in (H 1s, C 2sp2), what does the 2 refer to? Also, in the solutions manual, another notation was pi (C 2p, O 2p). What does the 2 signify in these two cases?

Remember what the basis of what hybridization is, it is hybridizing the subshells to create an orientation suitable for bonding. So the subshells, such as s or p, are hybridized and become for example and sp^3. However, the actual energy level (or shell) doesn't change, so that first 2 in C 2sp^2 represents the shell. Like n=2 from quantum numbers.

Same thing for the pi bond, it is indicating it is a p subshell in the 2nd energy level. Look at it as standard quantum number notation, but now with hybridization.
