Hybridization is based on the number of electron density regions around the central atom. If there is one region of electron density, it will have s orbitals. If there are two regions, it will have sp orbitals. If there are 3 electron density regions there is sp2 orbitals... and so on. CH4 has 4 regions of electron density so it will have sp3 orbitals while C2H4 has 3 regions of electron density around each carbon. Therefore, it has sp2 orbitals.
