Lone pairs

Since lone pairs of electrons don't contribute in the bonding, why do they form hybrid orbitals?

Like bonded electrons, lone pairs exist in hybrid orbitals. There's no reason, that's just how it works!

Hi!

Lone pairs are electron groups and therefore they must affect hybridization, just like they affect shape and bond angles!

The geometry of a molecule determines its hybridization. A molecule with 3 bonded atoms and one lone pair has tetrahedral geometry since it has 4 regions of electron density. This is why the molecule has a hybridization of sp3 even though the molecule only has three bonding regions.

Since lone pairs are still a part of the electron group, they will affect hybridization.

I like to think of it as since lone pairs affect shape, they also affect hybridization, since they are electrons too, just not shared electrons!

Hybrid orbitals still need to facilitate space for the presence of a central atom's lone pairs. As most above mentioned, lone pairs are still considered as electron groups and thus, need to be in an orbital.

I think since they will affect the shape of the molecules, they will also contribute in hybridization.

Electron pairs are still important in the shape of the molecule, as they interact with the electron clouds of the atoms bonded to the central atom. Hybrid orbitals depend on the molecular shape, therefore, electron pairs are included in hybridization.
