Counting for hybridization

Can I just count the bonds on an atom and determine the hybridization by making sure the exponents of the s and p add up to that number? I feel like that's what I did in high school, don't remember exactly though.

I believe that works. The number of electron dense regions should match up with how many total orbitals you have. For example, tetrahedral electron geometries will always be sp^3 hybridization.
