strategy for hybridization

Postby Giovanni Anguiano-Gutierrez 3L » Sun Nov 24, 2019 9:26 pm

What is the best way to go about finding the hybridization? Should we find the shape and base it off of that or should we go off the individual electron hybridizations and see which ones are combined?

I would just count the amount of bonds and from there write down the orbital that corresponds to it. For example, if there were three bonds, the hybridization would be sp^2 (there is one s orbital and 2 p for a total of 3)

hybridization is just counting the number of single (sigma) bonds and adding the number of double or triple (pi) bonds so find the hybridization number. If you can create the Lewis structure it will be easier to figure out.
