Hybridization Formulas

Postby Bryce Ramirez 1J » Sun Nov 24, 2019 11:36 pm

What are the different formulas for making arrangements of electron pairs. There are three formulas that involve the S and P orbital with Px and Py but I don't understand how they apply to hybrid orbitals.

You have to count the atoms around the atom you're looking at in a molecule.
If there are 4 atoms around the central atom, you'd have sp3
If there are 3 atoms around the central atom, youd have sp2
If there are 2 atoms around the central atom, youd have sp1

You just subtract 1 from the amount of bonding regions!
