can some please explain homework problem 2F.15?
noting that the bond angle of am sp3 hybridized atom is 109.5 and that of an sp2 hybridized atom is 120, do you expect the bond angle between two hybrid orbitals to increase or decrease as the s-character of the hybrids increases?
specifically what do they mean by s-character?
Bond angle/s character

Re: Bond angle/s character
I understood this question as from sp3 to sp2 the bond angles increase from 109.5 to 120 so if it goes from sp2 to sp you would expect bond angles of 180 as it would be in a linear arrangement

Re: Bond angle/s character
S-character I believe is the ratio of s to p, so as the ratio grows for s, the angles grow. Just think less p, less regions of density to repel the other regions.

Re: Bond angle/s character
Sp3 has less s character than sp2 so so will have more than sp2... This means the bond angle will increase as a trend
