## sigma and pi bonds

### sigma and pi bonds

How can you figure out the hybridization of sigma and pi bonds? How do the hybridization's differ if something is double bonded and has sigma and pi bonds?

Hybridization depends on the # of regions of electron density. 2 regions of electron density = sp hybridization. 3 regions of electron density = sp2 hybridization. 4 regions of electron density = sp3 hybridization. 5 regions of electron density = sp3d hybridization. 6 regions of electron density = sp3d2 hybridization. And you just put the row # in front of the s. So if it's in row 2 it would be 2sp.

If something is double bonded, then the sigma bond has sp^(number of electron density) hybridization, and the pi bond has p hybridization (ex 2p, with 2 being the row number), since in pi bonds, p orbitals are overlapping.

I thought hybridization was reliant upon the number of bonds, not just the electron density. Do lone pairs increase the hybridization as well?
