Hybridization

Postby RRahimtoola1I » Sat Nov 30, 2019 2:10 pm

Just a clarification because I thought hybridization would be more complicated. Do we just have to draw the Lewis structure, count the amount of charge clouds, and memorize the hybrid orbitals for each amount of charge cloud and write it down?

Does it get more complicated than this for this course?

You should be able to do everything in the homework problems

I think that's it! As long as you can do the homework problems with that, you should be good.

I think that's all. You just need to memorize the hybrid orbitals.

Yes I think that should be it. An easy way to check if your hybridization is correct is that the exponents of the s, p, and d orbitals should add up to the amount of electron clouds. So sp^2 has an electron density of 3 since 2+1=3.

That's just about it! The homework problems really help with practicing those skills.

I think that should be it. Lavelle didn't go over anything else for hybridization.

I believe that this is all that we need to know. As long as you know how this is applied in the homework problems then it should be fine.
